Autodesk Project Skyline and Gametrace.. cool!

Autodesk is making a wicked new pipeline for game creation. This is a preview from CGD 2012. This will allow Maya and 3dsmax to literally “link” directly to a game engine. You’ll be able to tweak and fiddle with your characters, environment, etc with a layer right on top of MAX or Maya. This is going to be exremely useful for artists! As an artist I’ve been waiting for something like this FOREVER! lol.. Enjoy the vid: http://area.autodesk.com/gdc2011/pd_gameprev

While that video is extremely cool I also found a couple more that run much longer and go much deeper into Autodesk Project Skyline.

Autodesk game development software growing

Autodesk has been buying up content creation and 3D technology for awhiile and I think most people in the biz are aware of that. What they may not know is how Autodesk is moving toward developing a game centric workflow with some new aquisitions and some new strategies. If you visit the Autodesk Area blogs you may have seen some hints into the future but they went a little more in depth at GDC and gfxspeak.com wrote an awesome article about the direction of Autodesk and it’s plans for their role in the future of game creation. Check it out here. You may also want to check the official Autodesk Gameware site here.

Check this WildPipe.com thread for Project Skyline videos that go into some depth.

control autodesk 3ds max with an iphone

Control cameras in 3dsmax with an iPhone.

Resident 3ds MAX nut back in the hizouse with a new script from “You Can Do It VFX”. The project is called iDevCam for iPhone and Autodesk MAX. This combo iPhone app/max script lets you do motion control (or in this case really, camera control) with your iPhone. Simply use your iPhone like a steering wheel to control the angle and some on screen stuff to control the rest. Very cool.

3d crowd system for 3ds max – geppetto

As the resident Autodesk MAX fanatic here I try to keep up on fun stuff for 3dsmax. Sometimes the “labs” at Autodesk can be a bit to dig through and so a lot of people don’t hear about new stuff for MAX. Anyway thought i’d post this 3d crowd system. It creates characters, walk paths, idle animations, seemingly the works. Still playing! :)

Unlimited Detail v2 – 3D Polygon count dont matter?

Last year I wrote a post about this company that claimed to have developed a technology that allowed them to not have to worry about polygon count. They seemed to have been able to take point cloud data and turn it into some pretty amazing stuff. What was odd was that they had this great video and then that was it… silence. Well our bud Rangar from #gamecode found there was news in his part of the world. I hadn’t paid much attention to what was once being called “Unlimited Detail”. In fact I heard a lot of people telling me it was a hoax. I thought… I guess we’ll see. I left my original post on cause it looked feasible. I knew it wasn’t out and I knew it could be BS but figured what the heck it’s still news… even if it’s news about a 3d hoax eventually ;)

Sell 3d models online

I sell some 3d models online at Turbosquid.com and have made a few thousand bucks over the years. I was recently updated via linkedin.com that there was a new joint in town. CGTrader.com allows you to sell your models online and revive back 100% of the sales!

So just one more place to unload your work and make a little bit more off of all the 3d models you’ve made over the years.

Most of the 3d stock models and textures that I’ve made over the years would have been a one-off type of deal but with these resources (which I don’t use nearly enough) I can help other 3d artists save time and make a few bucks myself. You also get referral info so you can pass the word and help the community and the sales grow.

If you want to sell your models now get in on the CGTrader.com Beta here.

If you have textures or stock art I found a great list of 40 places to sell your work online as well. http://mashable.com/2009/02/28/sell-designs-online/

Some of these are for stock art and textures.. I think a couple you can sell models on.. Haven’t had time to dig through all the links yet but the ones I did dig through looked pretty good.

Let us know if you know of more sites where you can sell your stuff.. sumo911@hotmail.com or bstone@bradleystone.com

EDIT: I found another awesome one!!! http://3docean.net/ When you sign up for this site you’re entered into an entire network of sites where you can sell everything from gfx, themes, and, even code! ..not to mention 3d models, textures and the like.

Autodesk 3dsmax 2012 Feature Vids and opinion

Being an avid Autodesk MAX user I’ve been super surprised at how awesome the new MAX is. It creams everything since 2009. It’s the best upgrade I can remember since v3.1 when I started. At GDC Autodesk demoed the 2012 version and it’s new features. Here are the links on Youtube

If you’re one of those types who says “I don’t want some new upgrade because every time I do I need to buy new RAM” don’t worry.. this baby rocks. Even on my old system this is WAY faster than every version before it since like 2008.. Don’t believe me? Check out this comparison video: http://youtu.be/Gz6bOU4JX1w

Nintentdo 3DS has a 3d camera?

Ok hold me back here! CNN just announced that they’ve gotten a hold of a new Nintendo 3DS and it has a stereoscopic 3d camera! Not being daunted by magic eye stereogram stuff I’m going to have to get my hands on one of these. I don’t think you can convey the 3d in any way over the internet.. It’s something that has to be seen in person.

Here is a little youtube video I found of the Nintendo 3DS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZZ2sV76QI0

Unlimited Detail 3d technology – future of 3d?

Ok this may be old news for most of you guys but I wanted to put it here because I thought it was interesting. I read a couple blogs saying that it was a hoax… I don’t know it looks real to me but I’m a 3d artist. I’ll try to bust the myth.

Anyway this video helps explain it:

And if you’d like to visit their website go here: http://unlimiteddetailtechnology.com/

Now if this is true I’d be looking to see who’s going to buy this tech. Nvidia ATI? I’d invest!

UPDATE:

Well after I posted this and never heard any more about it I started to wonder if it was all just B.S. I heard the term “unlimited detail hoax” more than once. And who knows.. it may still be true. The video struck me as feasible so though I never worried about deleting this post. However! News from the other side of the globe has arrived once again. Via an Aussie gamer website and our WP buddy Rangar I’ve seen my second installment. Here is a link to the main wildpipe blog post: Unlimited Detail v2 – 1yr later.

The new article is here! : http://www.wildpipe.com/news/unlimited-detail-v2-3d-polygon-count-dont-matter/
